As early as the mid-1800s, inhabitants started showing up in exactly what is now Garland. The leaders discovered the black soil perfect for cotton and the communities of Duck Creek and Embree thrived on that crop. In 1886, two railway lines developed depots in the area. Eventually those 2 neighborhoods combined and became Garland, formally included in 1891.
